Highlights of EFF National shutdown 20 March.

The EFF didn't take a step back for this march that was planned for a long time.The day has finally arrived the EFF has shaken the lives of many by it protest. Although several cases have been reported related to acts of violence,and arrests have been made by the Natjoints but the EFF remains to  calls the national shutdown a success.

1.National Shutdown | 87 protesters arrested

JOHANNESBURG - Eighty-seven protesters have been arrested in the past 15 hours for public-violence-related offences.

They are said to have been participating in the National Shutdown.

The arrests have been made by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) says the arrests were for public violence, intimidation, damage to critical infrastructure, theft and attempted looting

2. EFF CLAIMS ITS NATIONAL SHUTDOWN A SUCCESS

While the day may seem like an ordinary day for most, the EFF is insisting that it's not, claiming the empty malls, petrol stations, shops, and taxi ranks are all due to its national shutdown.

JOHANNESBURG - With several hours still to go, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has already declared its national shutdown a success as it calls on more members to take to the streets.

It has also claimed that the reduced movement of people was not due to a long weekend or schools being on recess but a show of support for its cause.

3. PROTEST Action | Over 500 arrested nationwide

JOHANNESBURG - At least 550 people have been arrested countrywide during the national shutdown.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) says the arrests were for public violence, intimidation, damage to critical infrastructure, theft and attempted looting.

Natjoints says it's satisfied with how law enforcement deployments ensured law and order during yesterday's protests and shutdown.

It says businesses and services managed to operate with minimum disruption.

There were pockets of intimidating incidents that were stopped.

4. PROTEST Action | Business as usual in Cape Town

CAPE TOWN - Security personnel maintained relative calm and law and order in the Western Cape during Monday's protest action.

Isolated cases of burning barricades and stone-throwing were quickly brought under control.

5. Durban central and Phoenix quiet with sporadic protests reported

Durban central was quiet with taxis operating as usual on Monday ahead of the EEFF national shutdown. 

A team travelling through the city said it seemed to be business as usual with people going to work under the watchful eyes of a strong police and private security presence. 

Buses and taxis were operating as normal in Phoenix, north of Durban, on Monday morning.

There was no protest action and incidents overnight or on Monday morning in the township targeted by EFF leader Julius Malema during a media briefing last week in reference to the July 2021 riots. 

A TimesLIVE team travelling north on the N2 reported a heavy police presence at the off-ramp heading towards King Shaka International Airport and a road block at the entrance to Richards Bay.
